Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on US President Donald Trump to increase sanctions pressure on Russia, particularly in light of Moscow’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Speaking during a meeting with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Zelenskyy expressed his belief that the time has come for tougher measures against Russia.
“We have reached the point of needing stronger sanctions because the Russians are not honouring what they promised America, or at least what America told us publicly,” Zelenskyy stated. He emphasised the importance of actions over words, adding that Ukraine is diligently reporting Russia’s violations to the United States on a daily basis, particularly regarding attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.
“Sanctions are crucial for us. We are doing what we agreed with America, but Russia is failing to keep its end of the deal,” Zelenskyy continued. His comments underline the frustration felt in Kyiv, with Zelenskyy stressing that Ukraine needs more than just diplomatic words, tangible actions and stronger sanctions are needed to hold Russia accountable.
While Ukraine continues to provide the US with detailed information on Russia’s violations, Zelenskyy is hoping that President Trump will use the available tools to increase pressure on the Russian government. He believes that if both sides uphold their commitments, a fair peace could be within reach in the near future.
Trump recently made headlines with a phone call to NBC News, where he warned that if Russia continues to block an agreement to end the violence in Ukraine, the US would impose secondary tariffs on all Russian oil.
For Zelenskyy and Ukraine, the hope is clear: stronger sanctions, backed by real action, could be the key to ending the conflict and paving the way for a lasting peace. The question remains, however,will President Trump answer that call?
