RAF Pilot’s Epic Carrier Launch Puts Him in Elite Aviator Club

An RAF officer has become one of a select few British pilots to qualify as a naval aviator, after successfully launching and landing an EA-18G Growler from the deck of USS Abraham Lincoln.

Squadron Leader Le Lohe completed the rigorous US Navy carrier qualification, earning his prestigious Wings of Gold and placing him among an exclusive group of RAF pilots with experience in both land and sea-based aviation.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in the 60-year history of transatlantic exchange programmes between the RAF and the US Navy.

Training for a Unique Challenge

Sqn Ldr Le Lohe is currently serving with US Electronic Attack Squadron 129 (VAQ-129) at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington, where he trains in electronic warfare operations. His carrier qualification required months of preparation, beginning in February, and included:

  • Academic training and simulators
  • Field carrier landing practice at Coupeville
  • Live training at Naval Air Station El Centro, California

Speaking about the experience, he described it as an “incredible honour” and highlighted the challenges of carrier aviation.

“Carrier flying is utterly unique. Getting shot off the catapult at 140 knots in under two seconds certainly focuses the mind,” he said.

Flying the EA-18G Growler

The EA-18G Growler is the US Navy’s most advanced electronic attack aircraft, providing tactical jamming and electronic protection for military operations. It is a specialised variant of the F/A-18F Super Hornet and plays a critical role in modern aerial warfare.

Sqn Ldr Le Lohe’s qualification gives him rare cross-platform expertise, making him one of the few RAF pilots trained in both land-based and carrier-based aviation.

“The coordinated teamwork required across so many different departments to achieve safe and efficient flying operations was a privilege to witness,” he said. “I will be forever grateful to VAQ-129 for allowing me to carrier qualify.”

An Exclusive Achievement

The number of RAF pilots who have qualified as naval aviators remains extremely small, making this a rare and prestigious achievement. It provides Sqn Ldr Le Lohe with specialist skills in carrier operations that few in the RAF possess.

He will continue to serve with the US Navy, developing his expertise in electronic warfare and carrier-based operations.
