The UK Government is set to unveil a new defence innovation body, aimed at accelerating the development of cutting-edge military technology for British troops and driving economic growth across the UK. Announced on 28 February, the initiative will tap into the UK’s tech and manufacturing sectors to rapidly deliver advanced defence solutions to the Armed Forces.
The new body, which will be launched at the Spring Statement, is part of the Government’s broader Defence Reform strategy, its largest overhaul of defence in over 50 years. It will simplify and streamline the innovation system within the Ministry of Defence (MOD), speeding up the process of scaling up innovative prototypes from production to mass manufacturing.
The initiative was confirmed after a meeting at RAF Waddington, Lincolnshire, where Defence Secretary John Healey, Chancellor Rachel Reeves, and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds met with leaders from 15 UK defence firms. The goal is to enhance the country’s defence capabilities and foster high-tech businesses within the defence tech ecosystem.
The new unit will focus on creating a clear path for UK companies to bring their innovations to market and ensure the Armed Forces have access to state-of-the-art equipment. It will also drive investment in defence start-ups through the National Security Strategic Investment Fund.
Increased defence spending, including a commitment to raise defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, will create thousands of high-skilled jobs and apprenticeships across the UK. Last year, defence spending supported over 430,000 jobs, benefitting every region of the country.
Defence Secretary John Healey highlighted that the UK aims to become a leader in defence innovation, supporting firms of all sizes to transform their ideas into reality. He also noted that the UK’s response to changing warfare, as demonstrated in Ukraine, will shape future technology investments.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves stressed the importance of investing in sophisticated military technology to ensure national security while creating economic opportunities. Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds added that a strong defence sector is essential for a secure and prosperous Britain, particularly in the aerospace, defence, security, and space industries.
The initiative comes as part of the Government’s broader industrial strategy, aiming to bolster national security while stimulating economic growth. With the launch of the new innovation body, the UK is poised to lead in developing advanced defence solutions while providing secure, well-paid jobs across the country.
