A new state-of-the-art Soldiers’ Centre has officially opened at the Army Training Centre (ATC) Pirbright, designed to enhance the welfare and sense of community among British Army recruits.
The two-storey facility, which cost £11 million, aims to provide recruits with a central hub for relaxation, social interaction, and essential services while they undertake their 13-week basic training course. The centre includes a cinema, music room, social spaces, retail outlets, and food services, offering recruits a space to unwind outside of their training schedules. It will also serve as a welcoming area for families attending Pass Off parades.
Supporting Recruits Through Training
For many new recruits, basic training is their first experience away from home, making welfare and community support a priority.
Speaking at the opening, Warrant Officer First Class Paul Carney, the Army Sergeant Major and the most senior soldier in the British Army, emphasised the significance of the new facility.
“Basic training is a massive transition for every recruit. The Soldiers’ Centre gives them a place to share that experience with others outside their rooms, providing much-needed support during their training journey.”
WO1 Carney added that the centre reflects the Army’s commitment to investing in high-quality facilities that support the wellbeing of its personnel.
“The welfare of our future soldiers is important to us. This central hub at ATC Pirbright ensures recruits have a place to relax, enjoy themselves, and build strong relationships with their colleagues.”
Funding and Investment in Welfare
The Army Central Fund (ACF) contributed £7 million towards the project, reinforcing its commitment to improving the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of serving personnel and their families.
Major General Sam Humphris MBE, Director Personnel and Chair of the ACF, said:
“We are extremely proud of the leadership gift we made to enable the delivery of this modern, high-quality welfare facility. It will support the morale of recruits and provide lasting benefits to them and their families.”
Sustainability and Modernisation
The Soldiers’ Centre is also part of the Army’s broader modernisation and sustainability efforts. The building was constructed using modern methods to improve efficiency and reduce the Army’s carbon footprint, including the installation of solar panels to generate on-site renewable energy.
At the official opening, Major General Richard Clements CBE, Director of Basing and Infrastructure, highlighted the importance of investing in modern facilities.
“This is an outstanding facility that will promote wellbeing and foster a sense of community among recruits at ATC Pirbright. It also demonstrates our ongoing investment in modernising the Army estate to support future capability.”
A Major Step for Recruit Welfare
The opening of the Soldiers’ Centre marks a significant step in improving the welfare infrastructure available to British Army recruits. By offering a modern and well-equipped space for social interaction, relaxation, and family engagement, the centre ensures that recruits at ATC Pirbright have the support they need throughout their training.
