In a recent phone call, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney focused on increasing pressure on Russia amidst the ongoing war. Zelenskyy shared details of the conversation on Telegram, emphasising the importance of both military and economic measures to counter Russia’s aggression.
The discussion began with Zelenskyy congratulating Carney on his recent assumption of office following Justin Trudeau’s resignation. He also expressed his gratitude for Canada’s continued support, particularly in terms of defence assistance and energy sector aid. Zelenskyy highlighted the critical need for ramped-up pressure on Moscow to secure a just peace.
“We need to increase the pressure on Moscow,” Zelenskyy remarked, referencing Canada’s leadership in advocating for stronger sanctions on Russia’s shadow fleet and banking sector. He called for comprehensive sanctions on all entities funding Russia’s military activities, stressing that only through these measures could President Putin be forced to the negotiating table for a lasting peace.
The leaders also discussed the humanitarian aspects of the security guarantees needed for Ukraine’s recovery, including the rebuilding of the country and supporting its economy once the war has ended. Zelenskyy affirmed that both nations would continue to work closely on these initiatives.
“We will work on this,” he said, underscoring the long-term commitment required to rebuild Ukraine after the conflict.
Further discussions focused on military-industrial cooperation between the two countries, particularly in light of Ukraine’s advancements in electronic warfare (EW) systems, long-range missiles, and drones. Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine was open to joint production with Canada, building on the experience both countries have gained through the war.
With Canada currently holding the G7 presidency, the leaders also addressed Ukrainian issues that are high on the international agenda, reinforcing Canada’s commitment to ongoing support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
Mark Carney became Prime Minister of Canada on 14 March, following the resignation of Justin Trudeau. Since assuming office, Carney has consistently reaffirmed Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine and has called on Russia to engage in peace talks to bring an end to the ongoing conflict.
