Trump, during a meeting with Zelensky, aggressively criticised the Ukrainian leader, accusing him of being ungrateful for the support the US has already provided and claiming that Zelensky had “no cards left to play.” The US president also warned that Zelensky was “gambling with World War III” and would need to reassess his approach to securing peace with Russia.
According to an anonymous White House official, Trump’s decision to “pause” military aid is part of a broader strategy to pressure Ukraine into peace talks with Russia, with a focus on reaching an agreement to end the ongoing conflict. Trump’s statement follows Zelensky’s comment that he believes a just and sustainable peace is “still very, very far away.” The US president quickly responded, calling Zelensky’s remark “the worst statement” and emphasising that America would not tolerate the continued conflict for much longer.
Trump’s stance comes after a long-standing tension over the pace and direction of peace talks. The US president has openly questioned whether Zelensky is truly committed to negotiating with Russia. According to reports, Trump has ordered that aid will remain paused until Ukraine shows a genuine willingness to engage in peace discussions.

However, Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, recently commented that Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington has made the possibility of such a deal “up in the air.” Waltz questioned whether Zelenskyy was ready to make the political compromises necessary to end the war.
