Shock Proposal: Ukraine May Accept Demilitarised Zone to Halt War with Russia, Says US Envoy

The United States Special Representative for Ukraine, retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, has said that Ukraine is prepared to consider the establishment of a demilitarised buffer zone along the front line with Russia.

Speaking on Fox News, Kellogg outlined a proposal involving a 30-day ceasefire in which both Russian and Ukrainian forces would hold their current positions. Under the plan, each side would withdraw troops by 15 kilometres, creating a 30-kilometre-wide buffer zone to be monitored by an international military coalition.

According to Kellogg, who advises former US President Donald Trump on Ukraine policy, the idea would form a temporary measure aimed at reducing hostilities and laying the groundwork for future negotiations.

He noted that such an arrangement would not necessarily define the long-term political status of occupied territories, citing historical examples such as the post-war transitions in the Baltic states and the reunification of Germany. He added that if a ceasefire could be maintained for a month, it would likely be extended, arguing that large-scale combat operations would be difficult to resume after a prolonged pause.

The proposed buffer zone would be overseen by what Kellogg called a “coalition of the resolute”, though details of which countries would be involved have not been provided.

Kellogg’s remarks come amid speculation about potential talks between former President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin has stated that such a meeting is necessary, but no date or format has been confirmed.

Meanwhile, EU Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius, has said that the European Union could significantly increase military support for Ukraine by purchasing weapons directly from European manufacturers. He also stated that, if diplomatic efforts led by Trump failed to persuade Russia to accept a ceasefire, the EU might present a stronger alternative proposal.

It was previously reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a ceasefire proposal presented by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, highlighting the continued challenges in reaching any form of agreement.
