Putin’s Record Losses in 2024 as Kyiv Warns Trump Against Early Peace Talks

In a grim milestone for Russia, Vladimir Putin’s forces have endured unprecedented losses in 2024, with 434,000 casualties reported, including 150,000 deaths. This figure, announced by Ukraine’s Commander in Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, surpasses the combined total of the previous two years, bringing overall Russian casualties in the war to 819,000.

Despite these devastating losses, Moscow continues to claim territorial gains. Over the weekend, Russian forces reportedly captured two more settlements in the eastern Donetsk region, highlighting the brutal stalemate that persists on the battlefield.

Kyiv’s Warning to Trump

As Donald Trump assumes the presidency in the United States, Ukrainian officials have issued a stark warning against any premature peace talks with Russia. Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to President Volodymyr Zelensky, stressed that forcing negotiations before Ukraine regains the upper hand would be catastrophic.

“The initiative has to be controlled. It must not be given away to Russia,” Podolyak emphasised, reflecting widespread concern that hasty diplomacy could legitimise Russia’s territorial gains.

Britain Explores Military Bases in Ukraine

Against the backdrop of escalating conflict, Britain is deepening its ties with Ukraine. Last week, a 100 year Partnership Agreement was signed, aiming to bolster security and cultural cooperation. As part of the deal, the UK is exploring the possibility of establishing military bases and logistics depots on Ukrainian soil.

The agreement, hailed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer as a testament to the UK’s unwavering support, includes £40 million for Ukraine’s economic recovery. This is in addition to £12.8 billion in military aid provided by Britain since 2022.

“Putin’s ambition to wrench Ukraine away from its closest partners has been a monumental strategic failure,” said Starmer. “Instead, we are closer than ever, and this partnership will take that friendship to the next level.”

Chemical Weapons and Drone Warfare

The Ukrainian General Staff has reported systematic use of chemical agents by Russian forces, with over 5,389 documented cases since February 2023. In December 2024 alone, Russian troops deployed chemical munitions 434 times, violating international conventions.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air defences continue to counter Russia’s increasing reliance on drones. Of 141 drones launched by Russia overnight, 93 were downed, with others redirected through electronic warfare tactics.

Trump’s Ukraine Strategy

Trump’s return to the White House has cast uncertainty over U.S. support for Ukraine. The Republican leader has pledged to end the war within 24 hours, although advisers concede this could take much longer. He has also suggested Ukraine may have to cede some territory to achieve peace, a stance that has drawn criticism from Kyiv and its allies.

While Trump previously indicated openness to additional aid in the form of loans, his scepticism about NATO and the billions spent on Ukraine highlights a potential shift in U.S. policy.

Britain and Ukraine’s Enduring Partnership

As the war enters its third year, Ukraine faces mounting challenges, including manpower shortages and territorial losses in the Donetsk region. However, Britain’s steadfast support offers a glimmer of hope. The recent treaty not only strengthens military cooperation but also promotes collaboration in areas like green energy and technology, further solidifying the bond between the two nations.
