In a move that strengthens Britain’s naval firepower, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) is set to finalise a deal for additional Aster 30 air defence missiles, vital protectors of the Royal Navy’s fleet. Following successful negotiations, Defence Minister Maria Eagle confirmed today that the contract is imminent.
The purchase will be made through the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), the European procurement agency that oversees multinational defence projects. “Negotiations to purchase Aster 30 have concluded, and a contract placement, via the multinational procurement agency OCCAR, is expected imminently,” Eagle stated.
A Critical Shield for the Fleet
The Aster 30 missiles play a crucial role in defending Royal Navy warships from a spectrum of aerial threats, including fast-moving fighter jets, drones, and incoming missiles. While the Navy secures its supply of Aster 30 missiles, it is simultaneously phasing out the shorter-range Aster 15 models as part of a broader upgrade strategy. The ageing system will be replaced by the Sea Viper CAMM (Common Anti-Air Modular Missile), a cutting-edge enhancement designed to bolster Britain’s maritime security.
