The UK is intensifying its efforts to improve military mobility across Europe, reinforcing its commitment to NATOβs eastern flank and its allies in the Baltic region.
Defence Minister Luke Pollard highlighted Exercise Hedgehog in the House of Commons as a clear demonstration of Britainβs capability to deploy forces rapidly. The exercise currently involves the 4th Brigade moving swiftly by road, rail, sea, and air to Estonia, with nearly 2,000 British troops participating alongside those permanently stationed there.
Responding to Labour MP Mike Tappβs question on improving troop movement in collaboration with international partners, Pollard said: βTo keep Britain secure at home and strong abroad, we are working with our EU, NATO and Joint Expeditionary Force partners to enhance military mobility.β
Mr Tapp also pointed to the strategic importance of Rail Baltica, a high-speed rail link under construction between Warsaw and Estonia, as a critical asset for rapid deployment during crises. He urged vigilance in light of ongoing threats from Russia, particularly towards the Baltic states.
The Defence Minister agreed, noting recent diplomatic engagements: βI met the Estonian ambassador and all ambassadors from JEF nations aboard HMS Sutherland last week. Fast, deployable forces are vital deterrents against Russian aggression.β
He concluded by reaffirming the UKβs dedication to supporting Estonia and NATOβs eastern border. βWe will continue to have their backs and ensure that our forces remain deployed to secure Estoniaβs freedom.β
