Ex-Commando’s 24-Hour Burpee Madness Raises £13K for Charity!

Most people would struggle to crank out 50 burpees in one go. Now imagine doing 5,896, in just 24 hours.

That’s exactly what former Royal Marines Commando Jamie Grant from Pershore, Worcestershire, achieved over the weekend, pushing his body to the absolute limit to raise money for The Royal Marines Charity. The gruelling challenge, which saw him squat, jump, and push himself through almost 6,000 burpees, has raised an incredible £13,000, all in the name of giving back to the organisation that once helped him through his darkest times.

A Battle of Mind and Body

Grant, who served two tours in Afghanistan and took part in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, originally aimed for a staggering 10,000 burpees. He fell short of that goal, but for him, the challenge was never about hitting a number.

“It was all about the charity and raising funds for an incredible cause,” he said.

Describing the challenge as “incredible” but physically punishing, he admitted feeling sore afterwards. However, with his Royal Marines brothers by his side, he pushed through.

From the Battlefield to the Ambulance Service

Grant was part of 40 Commando during the Battle of Al-Faw in Iraq, a critical operation in the early stages of the war. While serving, he received life-changing news, his wife called to tell him she was pregnant.

“The mixed emotions of having to get ready for operations while having this in the back of my mind…it was quite difficult to focus on the job at hand,” he recalled.

Years after leaving the Marines, Grant transitioned to working in the ambulance service, a role he described as rewarding but emotionally challenging. It unearthed struggles he hadn’t fully processed, leading to flashbacks, insomnia, and short temper, signs of the hidden battles many veterans face.

Giving Back to Those Who Saved Him

For Grant, The Royal Marines Charity was a lifeline.

“They’re just incredible people. They are so selfless,” he said.

The charity helped him through dark times, providing crucial support when he needed it most. His record-breaking burpee challenge was his way of paying it forward, ensuring others receive the same life-changing help.

A Test of Resilience

Though he didn’t reach 10,000 burpees, 5,896 burpees in 24 hours is a superhuman feat, and one that raised thousands for a cause close to his heart.

And in the true spirit of a Royal Marine, quitting was never an option.
