EU Defence Chief Briefs NATO Ambassadors on Strengthening Europe’s Security

The European Union’s Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius, has briefed NATO ambassadors in Brussels in a fresh show of unity between the EU and the Alliance.

Addressing the North Atlantic Council on Tuesday 4 November 2025, Mr Kubilius spoke alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in what marked his third appearance before the Council, underscoring the growing partnership between the two organisations.

Mr Rutte, who chaired the meeting, said NATO and the EU must continue to work hand in hand to bolster Europe’s security, while maintaining a clear division of responsibilities between them.

“We must strengthen our transatlantic collaboration while respecting the unique roles of NATO and the EU,” the Secretary General said, welcoming the EU’s ongoing contributions to regional defence.

Rutte also praised the EU’s Defence Readiness Roadmap, describing it as a vital framework for improving Europe’s ability to respond to future threats. The plan includes proposals to boost defence investment and production, and to ensure long-term support for Ukraine, a key shared priority for both organisations.

The meeting reflected what officials called “a maturing strategic partnership” between NATO and the EU, as both continue to align on defence readiness and deterrence amid evolving global challenges.
