Business Secretary Inaugurates Saab’s Cutting-Edge Hampshire Facility

A major boost for the UK’s defence industry unfolded this week as the Business and Trade Secretary officially opened Saab’s state-of-the-art manufacturing site in Hampshire.

A Milestone for Saab’s UK Expansion

Located in Fareham, the new facility is dedicated to the development, production, and support of the company’s advanced radar and underwater robotics systems. Describing the occasion as “a milestone” in its ongoing growth, Saab emphasised its long-term commitment to expanding its UK operations.

The site, which was formally inaugurated by Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds on Tuesday, is set to support up to 400 jobs while also providing valuable apprenticeship opportunities for local talent.

More Than Just Manufacturing

Saab’s president and CEO, Micael Johansson, underscored the site’s significance, stating that it is “more than a manufacturing site” for the company.

Engineers and technicians at the Hampshire facility are working on cutting-edge technologies, including the 3D multi-mission radar, Giraffe 1X, and the all-electric subsea remotely operated vehicle, Seaeye SR20.

“This new campus is testament to Saab’s growth in the UK, reinforcing our long-term commitment to the UK’s defence,” Johansson added. “Thanks to our investment here, we will deliver innovative technologies and products for our customers.”

Government Applauds Innovation and Growth

Speaking to reports, Mr Reynolds hailed the development as a proud moment for the UK’s defence and technology sectors.

“We should be very proud not only that we have some of this equipment already in the field but also that we have the innovation, the skills, workforce, and technology to be developing this within the UK with a world-class company like Saab,” he said.

A Bright Future for UK Defence Technology

As Saab continues to expand its footprint in Britain, the Fareham site represents not only a boost to the local economy but also a strengthening of the UK’s position in global defence innovation.
