Netanyahu Vows Total Control of Gaza as Global Outcry Grows

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Israeli forces are advancing towards full military control of Gaza, a move he says is aimed at eliminating “terrorist infrastructure” and securing long-term national safety. The statement, delivered during a press conference in Jerusalem, has triggered widespread condemnation from Palestinian officials and international organisations.

Netanyahu defended Israel’s ongoing military operations, stating that months of action in the West Bank, particularly targeting refugee camps, have significantly reduced the number of attacks against Israeli targets. “We must have full security control over Gaza,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s hardline approach.

Civilian Toll Mounts

The human cost of the conflict, however, continues to climb. Gaza’s Ministry of Health has reported that recent strikes in densely populated areas have killed dozens of civilians. Many of the attacks have targeted areas where families sought refuge, leading to scenes of devastation and chaos.

Palestinian authorities have labelled Israel’s military operations a gross violation of international law, accusing the Israeli government of worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis in both Gaza and the West Bank. Entire neighbourhoods have been levelled, leaving thousands displaced and critical infrastructure destroyed.

International Condemnation

Netanyahu’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism globally. Al Jazeera and other media outlets note that many view the planned extension of Israeli control over Gaza as a breach of international norms and a potential flashpoint for wider regional instability.

Human rights organisations have expressed grave concern, warning that the Israeli campaign may amount to collective punishment, a direct violation of the Geneva Conventions.

Temporary Ceasefire on the Table

Despite the escalation, Netanyahu stated that Israel is prepared to agree to a temporary ceasefire. He clarified, however, that this pause in military action would only serve to facilitate the release of hostages still held by Hamas and would not signal an end to Israeli operations.

These comments come amid a breakdown in ceasefire negotiations led by Qatar and Egypt. Hamas has responded by suspending its participation in talks, accusing Israel of acting in bad faith and maintaining occupation policies.

Warnings of a Wider Conflict

Analysts and regional experts have warned that continued military escalation in Gaza and the West Bank risks sparking a broader regional conflict. The humanitarian situation is worsening by the day, with thousands forced from their homes and vital resources, including water, electricity, and medical services, rapidly diminishing.

The international community has called on both parties to exercise restraint and prioritise diplomatic solutions. However, with violence ongoing and positions hardening, the prospects for peace appear increasingly remote.
