A tense search is currently underway in Lithuania after four US soldiers and a tank went missing during a routine training exercise. With both American and Lithuanian forces now combing the area near the country’s border with Belarus, the disappearance of these servicemen has sparked a massive search and recovery operation.
The incident occurred during a scheduled tactical training session in Pabrade, a town located in the east of Lithuania. The missing soldiers, part of the 1st Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division, were conducting manoeuvres when they vanished, prompting a swift response from both US military officials and Lithuanian authorities.
A post from the US Embassy in Lithuania confirmed the situation, stating: “Four U.S. Army Soldiers are currently missing in Lithuania in a training area near Pabradė. A search is being conducted by the U.S. Army, Lithuanian Armed Forces, Lithuanian law enforcement and others. Search and recovery efforts are underway.”
The US Embassy also noted that the soldiers were engaged in routine training at the time of their disappearance. The vehicle they were operating, reportedly a tank, is also missing, adding to the complexity of the search efforts.
Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, commanding general of the V Corps, expressed his gratitude for Lithuania’s rapid response to the situation. He said, “I would like to personally thank the Lithuanian Armed Forces and first responders who quickly came to our aid in our search operations. It’s this kind of teamwork and support that exemplifies the importance of our partnership and our humanity, regardless of what flags we wear on our shoulders.”
The soldiers were first reported missing on Tuesday, March 25th, with the situation escalating quickly as teams from both countries worked in unison to locate the missing personnel. While details of the search are still unfolding, the cooperation between the US and Lithuania’s armed forces highlights the strength of their alliance in the face of adversity.
As the search continues, the world watches closely, hoping for a swift and safe resolution.
