Recently, we had the privilege of sitting down with John King, a 100-year-old World War 2 veteran and the last surviving crew member of HMS Janus, for an episode of The Debrief that left us inspired, humbled, and determined to do more.
John King: A Story of Bravery and Survival
At just 18 years old, John King served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, facing unimaginable challenges in the line of duty. On 23rd January 1944, during the Battle of Anzio, HMS Janus was tragically sunk by a flying torpedo. The ship’s company suffered devastating losses, with 160 lives lost and only 80 survivors.
John, who now stands as the sole surviving crew member, shared his incredible story with Big Phil, recounting the harrowing events of that day, the camaraderie of his shipmates, and the resilience it took to survive one of the most perilous moments of the war.
This conversation wasn’t just about reliving history; it was a moving tribute to the sacrifices made by an entire generation who fought for freedom.
