Russian news anchor Dmitry Kiselev, known for his pro-Kremlin stance, has mocked the size of the British Army during a live broadcast, claiming that the entire UK Armed Forces could fit into Wembley Stadium with room to spare for the French. Kiselev’s comments came in response to Keir Starmer’s statements about European troops helping to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine.
On air with Russian MP Vyacheslav Nikonov, Kiselev dismissed the UK’s military presence, saying, “You could fit the whole British Army into Wembley Stadium and you’d still have room for some of the French.” The jibe came after UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak unveiled plans for a “coalition of the willing,” which would involve British troops and aircraft playing a central role in defending Ukraine.
Keir Starmer, leader of the UK’s Labour Party, has warned that the UK must be ready to “defend peace” in Ukraine, or the conflict could eventually “wash up on our shores.”
Nikonov, echoing Kiselev’s dismissive tone, argued that while European countries may claim to be providing financial and military support to Ukraine, their resources are limited. “Europe may talk big about giving Ukraine money and weapons, but they don’t have that much money or produce weapons. The Americans can turn the taps off and stop supplying Ukraine with arms. The Western system is crashing like a house of cards,” he added.
However, these claims are not supported by the facts. According to fullfact.org, the strength of the UK military stands at 183,230 personnel as of April 2024, with 37,780 in the Royal Navy (including the Royal Marines), 110,300 in the Army, and 35,140 in the RAF. The UK’s military is a significant force, and the country remains committed to supporting Ukraine’s defence efforts.
Meanwhile, at a summit in London, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined UK leaders to discuss Ukraine’s future security. As part of this ongoing support, the UK announced £1.6 billion in export finance to provide 5,000 air defence missiles, which will be manufactured in Belfast. This move underlines the UK’s determination to back Ukraine and its sovereignty.
The summit followed a tense exchange between Zelensky and former US President Donald Trump. Trump accused Zelensky of “gambling with world war three” and failing to show sufficient gratitude for US military aid. Despite the disagreement, Zelensky has continued to express his appreciation for US support and reiterated his willingness to strike a deal regarding Ukraine’s natural resources in exchange for continued military aid.
While Russian propagandists like Kiselev seek to undermine Western unity, the facts speak for themselves. The UK and its allies are holding firm in their commitment to supporting Ukraine, with military aid, strategic defence agreements, and diplomatic efforts ensuring that the West remains resolute in its stance.
