A dramatic armed police stand-off has brought Sheffield to a standstill after reports of a man wielding weapons inside a city apartment building.
The major operation unfolded at The Gateway building on Broad Street at around 19:00 GMT on Monday, with police swiftly sealing off the area. More than 10 emergency vehicles, including armed response teams and ambulances, remain at the scene as specialist officers attempt to negotiate with the suspect.
City in Chaos as Evacuations Begin
As the situation escalated, about 80 residents were evacuated from The Gateway and escorted to the nearby Ponds Forge sports centre. Others in neighbouring buildings were urged to stay indoors for their safety.
Among those forced to leave was Erin, who described the sudden evacuation:
“We’ve literally got the clothes we’re standing in and our phones.”
Sam Edwards, 31, was the first to alert authorities after a disturbing commotion in the flat above his.
“The chap living up there started emptying the contents of his flat onto our outdoor terrace and then tried to set it alight,” he said.
Shortly after, armed officers arrived, shouting for everyone to evacuate.
“It was quite alarming,” Sam admitted.
At Ponds Forge, tensions are running high, with displaced residents grappling with uncertainty.
“It’s people’s homes and possessions at stake. There’s a lot of anxiety, but we’ve just tried to be there for one another,” Sam added.
Despite the distressing ordeal, sports centre staff have been praised for their kindness, providing evacuees with tea, coffee, and even air mattresses, which arrived around 04:00 GMT.
Severe Travel Disruptions
As the police operation continues, Sheffield remains in gridlock.
Key routes into the city are heavily affected, with Park Square roundabout, a vital access point, completely closed. Sheffield Parkway between Park Square roundabout and Derek Dooley Way remains shut, causing significant delays, particularly for commuters traveling from the east.
Tram services in the area have also been severely disrupted, with police advising residents to seek alternative routes.
Students Among Those Impacted
The Pinnacles student accommodation, home to Sheffield Hallam University students, is also affected by the lockdown. A university spokesperson confirmed they were actively supporting impacted students, though campus operations remain unaffected.
What Happens Next?
With negotiations still underway, the city is holding its breath. Armed police remain in position, working to bring the situation to a peaceful resolution.
This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more details emerge.
