Fire Crews Battle Wildfire Near RAF Spadeadam as Heatwave Increases Risk Across Region

Firefighters have spent the night tackling a significant wildfire in Wark Forest, as authorities issue fresh warnings about the heightened risk of wildfires during the current spell of warm, dry weather.

The blaze broke out at Paddaburn, just north of RAF Spadeadam, shortly before 5pm yesterday. Approximately 4,000 square metres of young trees, grassland, and bracken were set alight.

The RAF Spadeadam fire crew was first on the scene and quickly requested back-up from local fire services. Crews from Brampton, Haltwhistle, Hexham, and Bellingham were deployed to the remote location to bring the flames under control.

The fire, which covered an area roughly 1.5 kilometres square, was successfully contained and did not spread onto the RAF range itself.

A spokesperson from the fire service confirmed that, while the situation has stabilised, the risk of wildfire remains high due to extremely dry vegetation and ongoing warm weather conditions.

Authorities have begun placing fire warning notices in key visitor locations across the region, including car parks, noticeboards, near footpaths, and on fence posts, in a bid to prevent further incidents.

The public is being urged to take extra care in the countryside. Advice includes:

  • Fully extinguishing cigarettes
  • Taking all litter home
  • Parking responsibly to avoid blocking access
  • Avoiding open fires or barbecues in rural areas

Carlisle MP Julie Minns praised the emergency response, saying:

“Thank you to the crews from RAF Spadeadam, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service for your prompt action.
A reminder please to all of us to be extra careful during this sunny spell.”

In the event of a wildfire, people are advised to move to safety and call 999, providing as much detail as possible about:

  • The location and direction of the fire
  • What type of vegetation is burning
  • Any people, animals, or property at risk

The fire service has already responded to several wildfires this year, and with summer conditions only just beginning, they are urging the public to remain vigilant.
